If only a few hair cells (thousands of tiny nerves) the result may only be a mild amount of hearing loss. Therefore hearing aids may be sufficient to amplify sound. If more than a few hair cells are damaged that means that a moderate amount of cochlear damage or hearing loss occurs. More powerful hearing aids may be appropriate in this case but even with the hearing aids the sounds may still be distored. I hope this helped!
